Researcher visit/Mt. Sinai/Cornell（病院・研究所訪問）

I met two research doctor in NYC Dr, Koizumi and Dr, Morishita. They taught us many things, but what is the most interesting is that they think the Japanese must come to America to study. In America, we have a chance to study more especially about research, so one day I want to go to America to research.
和訳 僕らはNew YorkのMt Sinaiで小泉先生と森下先生にお会いしました。先生方から多くの事を学びましたが、日本人はもっとアメリカに留学すべきだとおっしゃっていたのが1番興味深かったです。アメリカでは研究分野に関して学べる機会が多くあるので、僕も1度研究しに行ってみたいです。

And I also could hear about difference of research in America and Japan. In America, more young person can have own laboratory comparing to Japan. Hearing their talking, I can know about a new choice in future.
和訳 また、アメリカと日本の研究の違いについても話していただきました。アメリカでは、比較的若い研究者が自分のラボを持つことができるそうです。彼らの話を聞いて、自分の将来の新しい選択肢として考えられるようになりました。

Kaoru Matsuda
Not only training, we had opportunities to meet Japanese doctors at laboratories and hospitals. I hadn’t been so interested in research, but after I met them, my mind changed a little. I want to research once because it seems interesting and worthwhile job. And I knew that we have a lot of ways to work in America, not just a researcher. Now I want to work in America once, so I need to think which way is the best for me.
和訳 トレーニングの他にも、日本人の先生のいらっしゃる研究室や病院に行き、お会いする機会をいただけました。私はこれまで研究にはあまり興味を持っていなかったのですが、ニューヨークで研究を続けている先生とお会いし、お話を聞く中で、臨床だけでなく研究も興味深くやりがいのある仕事だなと少し気持ちが変わり、一度は研究にも携わりたいと思うようになりました。またアメリカで働くイコール研究留学だと思っていたのですが、色々な働き方の先生にお会いし、研究の他にも多くの道が自分にあることを知る事ができました。一度は医師としてアメリカで働くことが夢なので、どの道が自分に合っているか、これから検討していくつもりです。

At the August 21st, in the morning, we visited Mt. Sinai Hospital, which is one of the most famous hospitals in NY, and we were guided inside by its students, and talked with them. I heard that the tuition of Mt. Sinai Medical School were higher than that in Japan. After that, we visited Dr. Hirofumi Morishita’s lab. He is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Neuroscience and Ophthalmology at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of experience-dependent brain plasticity during developmental critical period. We heard one of his researches, and it was very interesting. In the afternoon, we visited Cornell Brain and Mind research institute, and met Dr. Makoto Ishii and Dr. Kenzo Koizumi. They told us that it was important to have a firm conviction to success. These two visits of the day stimulated my mind, and I got interested in a medical research more than before.
和訳 ８月２１日の午前中は、ニューヨークで名のあるマウントサイナイ病院を訪れ、学生の方々に案内していただきました。マウントサイナイ医学学校の学費は日本のものより高いと聞きました。その後、森下先生の研究所を訪ねました。彼はマウントサイナイ医学学校の精神医学、神経科学、眼科学の助教授であり、彼の研究は臨界期における経験依存的な脳の可塑性メカニズムを解明することでした。私達は彼の研究の一部をお聞きしましたが、大変興味深いものでした。午後には、コーネル大学研究所を訪れ、石井先生と小泉先生にお会いしました。彼らは、自分の意志をぶらさないことが大切だと教えてくださりました。この日の二つの訪問は自分の心を刺激し、以前よりも研究への興味が湧くようになりました。

I thought being active was the most important in America. The American tell others their ideas honestly and frankly. In fact, in Cornell Brain & Mind research institute, a native American person, Dr. Ishii told Dr. Koizumi that “my idea is quite different from yours”. I was very surprised at how frankly he told Dr. Koizumi his opinion. He also told us that the Japanese must try to appeal to others. The American are good at presenting themselves and the Japanese tend to hesitate to express their feelings. To be an attractive person in America, I thought I had to talk more frankly and be more active.
和訳 積極的であるということがアメリカでは最も重要なのだと思いました。アメリカ人は自分の考えを他人に率直に話します。実際、コーネル大学脳と心の研究所では、ネイティブアメリカンである石井先生は小泉先生に対して、「私の考えはあなたと全く違う」と言っておられました。私は彼がこれほど率直に意見を伝えるのかと非常に驚きました。また彼は私たちに、日本人は他人に対して自分をアピールするようにしなさいと言われました。アメリカ人は自己主張をするのが上手なのに対して、日本人は自分の思いを述べるのに躊躇しがちです。アメリカで魅力的な人間になるためには、私はもっと率直に話をしてもっと積極的にならねばと思いました。
