(1)Studying medical English in Pace University
At first, we studied basic medical English, which is essential in order to conduct medical interviews and physical examinations in English. I will explain how we studied medical English there. We played 4 roles, a doctor, an assistant to the doctor, a patient and a family member of the patient. The patient created a case, and the doctor conducted a medical interview and a physical examination to collect necessary information and discuss some possible tests and treatments.
（和訳）(1)Pace Universityでの医学英語の勉強
まず、英語で医療面接や身体診察をする上で必須となる、基本的な医学英語の勉強をしました。ここでは、学生がそれぞれ医師・医師のアシスタント役・患者・患者の家族の４役に分かれ、患者役が自ら考えて演じる症例に対して、医師役は医療面接・身体診察を行って必要な情報を収集し、必要な検査・治療を考えるというものでした。
(2)Medical interview simulation with the simulated patients in Simulation Studio
We simulated medical interviews with the simulated patients. We had 12 minutes to have an interview. After the interview, the simulated patient pointed out our good points and bad points about our behavior, pronunciation and expression. We did this series of interviews and feedback sessions 15 times over 3 days.
The simulated patients understood the case which they played completely and they were prepared to answer our every question. The interviews were full of tension because the simulated patients played their roles so convincingly, performing as if they really felt pain.
（和訳）(2)Simulation Studioでの模擬患者との医療面接シミュレーション
次に実際に模擬患者との医療面接のシミュレーションを行いました。ここでは一人の模擬患者につき１２分の診察時間が与えられ、診察が終わると模擬患者から、英語の発音・表現、診察中の立ち振る舞いなどについて良かった点・悪かった点について指摘して頂けるというものでした。この一連の流れを３日間で計１５セット行いました。
模擬患者は自分が演じる症例について深く勉強されており、私たちのあらゆる質問に対する答えが準備されていました。また、完全に患者を演じきっており、痛そうに苦しむ様子も実際の患者そのものだったため、医療面接は本番さながらの緊張感に満ちたものでした。
(3)Visiting hospitals and research facilities in New York
I had opportunities to communicate with doctors and researchers from the US and Japan. They talked with us about the differences in the medical systems between Japan and the United States. I think the research environment in the United States is very good. But, it was very impressive for me that the social structure in the United States is based heavily on ability and accomplishment, so it is difficult to continue researching without producing good results in the United States.
（和訳）(3)ニューヨークの病院・研究施設の見学
日本からニューヨークに留学している医師・研究者の方と交流する機会がありました。現在、実際にアメリカで働いている方々から見て、日本とアメリカの医療はどのような違いがあるのかということについて話していただきました。中でも印象的だったのは、アメリカは研究する環境においては充実している一方で、実力主義の側面が強く、結果が出せなければアメリカで研究者を続けていくのは難しいということでした。
