The American medical system is simple, too. The more money you pay, the better treatment you can get. I was surprised to hear that hospitals choose patients based on their insurance. I thought everyone must have insurance, but it was not ordinarily so in the US. To tell the truth, the medical care is not so different between Japan and the US, but the insurance system is so different. American doctors consider the Japanese insurance system to be great, but they also say Japan is too complacent to everyone. I don’t know which system is better, but I realized what we Japanese consider common is not common for others.

（和訳）アメリカの医療制度もまたシンプルである。お金をたくさん払うほど、いい医療が受けられる。私は病院が患者の保険の種類によって患者を受け入れるかどうかを決めるということを聞いたときにはとても驚いた。私は皆保険が当たり前だと思っていたが、それはアメリカでは当たり前ではないのだ。実は日本とアメリカでの医療技術の差はほとんど感じなかった。しかし、保険制度は驚くほど異なっていた。アメリカの医師達は日本の保険制度はすばらしいと言っていたが、一方であまりにも優しすぎるとも言っていた。私はどちらの制度のほうがより良いかは分からないが、日本人が常識だと考えている事は、海外では常識ではないということにあることに気付かされた。
