New York Program report

We took Medical English lessons at Pace University. Janis sensei taught us Medical words and sentences for medical interviews. She corrected our mistakes and gave me some advice so we could understand how to use English more appropriately. She also taught us how to approach patient’s diseases by using OPQRST and we simulated medical interviews with each other.
We visited two research labs, Dr.Lyden’s Lab and Dr.Morishita’s Lab. At Dr.Lyden’s Lab, some Japanese doctors came and talked about their research and life in New York. I was able to understand how I might be able to study abroad in the future. At Dr.Morishita’s Lab we saw the actual research space. Most devices are shared and they pay a lot of labor costs, for example for breeding mice, to have time to concentrate on research. I feel it is very efficient for researchers.
I had a lot of good experiences in this program. I learned American culture and medicine. I learned the good points and bad points in Japanese and American medicine. I felt the American medical system was more efficient than the Japanese system. But most people who knew both said that if they were a patient, they would choose Japanese medicine. It is a Japanese good point.
I also learned English conversation and interview skills. I had many opportunities to speak with native English speakers. This experience was useful to study English conversation. I want to practice English more.

Medical Englishの授業はPace大学で行い、Janis先生とBrian先生がレクチャーをして下さいました。臓器別の疾患や問診で必要な医療英語、問診方法やそれに必要なフレーズなどの授業を受け、お互いに簡単な医療面接を行なったり、背中に貼られた自分の疾患を尋ねたりし、病気へのアプローチ方法を学びました。また、文法やフレーズに対し細かく修正していただき、英語の使い方を再確認することができました。
研究室見学ではDr.Lydenの研究室と、別日にDr.Morishitaの研究室の訪問をしました。Dr.Lydenの研究室に集まってくださった先生方は日本人で、留学している先生から実際にアメリカの免許を取得している先生など、さまざまな観点からお話をいただきました。実際にアメリカで暮らしている人の実際の話を聞く事ができ、留学などで海外へ行く事がある際に必要な事を知る事ができ、有意義な時間でした。Dr.Morishitaの研究室では実際の研究機材や、マウスなどを見させて頂いたのち、研究についてのお話を伺いました。一つの建物で多くの研究室があるため基本は研究機材は共有しており、またマウスの飼育を専門の業者に任せているなど、研究することに集中できる環境を作っていた事が印象的でした。
ニューヨーク研修を通じてさまざまな事を学ぶ事ができました。さまざまな人との会話を通じて、それぞれ自分のやりたい事を明確にし、それを目標に生活をしている事がはっきりと見えました。アメリカでは自分の立ち位置を作り上げる事が大事であり、積極性を見せる事がより好まれる社会であると感じました。また、アメリカにいらっしゃる先生方と直接会うことができ、実際の診療や研究を見ることができた事は大変有意義な経験であったと思います。留学することや、外国人を診察する可能性を考えてこのプログラムに参加したので、この経験を活かして今後の英語の勉学に努めたいと思います。
